(VOVWORLD) - Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum warned Tuesday that Mexico could retaliate with tariffs of its own, after US President-elect Donald Trump said he would impose 25% import duties on Mexican goods unless Mexico stops the flow of drugs and migrants across the border.

In a speech on Tuesday, President Sheinbaum said drugs were a US problem, not a Mexican one, adding that imposing tariffs could harm American automakers with factories on both sides of the US-Mexico border.

However, the Mexican leader offered to talk about the issue with the US elect President, saying “dialogue is the best path to achieve understanding, peace and prosperity for the two countries.”
