(VOVWORLD) - The 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS 1982) and ASEAN solidarity play important roles in resolving sovereignty disputes in the South China Sea (called the East Sea by Vietnam), according to an article published by Malaysia’s Theinsnews.com on Sunday.

The article called UNCLOS an important legal instrument to define issues relating to sovereignty, territorial waters, and the rights and obligations of a maritime state. This is the legal basis on which to make maritime policy and develop corresponding legal documents, it said.

The article highlighted the role of ASEAN in settling disputes in the East Sea, adding that to ensure the resources of the East Sea are used for the benefit of ASEAN states, it would be ideal for ASEAN countries to reach a firm political, military, and economic agreement to respect each other's claims while jointly investing in the protection of the area for the benefit of all participating nations.
