During their meeting in Mexico, Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi told Mexican foreign minister Marcelo Ebrard that Japan wants to closely cooperate to maintain and strengthen the free and open economic framework.
Britain, China and South Korea have recently shown interest in joining the CPTPP and Japanese officials are keeping close tabs on whether the US will return to the pact under the new administration. The CPTPP (previously known as TPP) comprises Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, and Vietnam. It came into effect in December 2018 after the US withdrew in 2017.
