IPU 132 enters 3rd working day

(VOVworld) – The 132nd Inter-Parliamentary Union entered its 3rd working day with 5 meetings on the agenda, including a meeting on the role of parliaments in combating terrorist acts perpetrated by Boko Haram against innocent civilians, in particular women and girls.

(VOVworld) – The 132nd Inter-Parliamentary Union entered its 3rd working day with 5 meetings on the agenda, including a meeting on the role of parliaments in combating terrorist acts perpetrated by Boko Haram against innocent civilians, in particular women and girls.

On Monday, Standing Committee on Democracy and Human Rights discussed International Law as it relates to national sovereignty, non-intervention in the internal affairs of States and human rights. In 2 other meetings, parliamentarians debated “Cyber warfare – a serious threat to peace and global security” and “Shaping a new system of water governance: promoting parliamentary action on water”.

On Sunday, in a meeting of the IPU Governing Council, National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung and IPU President Saber Chowdhury discussed the event’s agenda. They agreed not to admit any new member to the IPU for the time being. The council elected National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung Chairman of the 132nd Inter-Parliamentary Union. Other meetings took place on Sunday, including a meeting of the Standing Committee on Sustainable Development, Finance and Trade, and the Standing Committee on Peace and International Security. The Assembly’s agenda for Sunday also included a Forum of Young Parliamentarians of the IPU.

A cultural event promoting customs of Vietnam’s 54 ethnic minority groups was held Sunday evening at the Vietnam National Village for Ethnic Culture and Tourism near Hanoi, to welcome delegates to IPU 132. Vice Chairwoman of the Vietnamese National Assembly Tong Thi Phong spoke at the event: "I hope that representatives from the 54 ethnic groups, all beneficiaries of comprehensive national investment policy, will help the visitors gain a deeper understanding of Vietnam and its vibrant and united people."

The event aimed to give IPU-132 participants an opportunity to experience rituals, traditional costumes and cuisine, and unique folk games.
