(VOVWORLD) - Chairman of the Indonesian People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Bambang Soesatyo urged China on Monday to comply with the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

During a virtual meeting with Chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference National Committee Wang Yang, Mr. Bambang Soesatyo said that China's non-compliance with UNCLOS has created tensions with Indonesia in the Natuna Sea, and tensions between China and Malaysia, the Philippines, and Vietnam.

This could set a bad precedent for the future and potentially escalatetensions amid collective global efforts to combat COVID-19, he said.

“Indonesia affirms the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the South China Sea," he noted.

The South China Sea is called the East Sea in Vietnam.
