After a meeting with UN-Arab League special envoy Lakhdar Brahimi, Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Makdad expressed his regret that this round of talks did not make any progress. So far, Syrian government delegation insisted that it does not discuss any topics, except terrorist act issue that Damascus accused hostile elements and foreign gunmen of carrying out in Syria. The government delegation said that the role of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is a nonnegotiable issue. They also refused to examine a 22-point document proposed by the opposition relating to political transitional period, adding that they will not consider Brahimi’s suggestion that both issues should be discussed at the same time.
The number of casualties by conflicts continues to increase in Syria. An observer team says more than 5,000 people have been killed since the first round of peace talks took place on January 22.
