Le Pen accused Macron of complacency in the fight against Islamist fundamentalism and rejection of reasonable measures to fight extremism following a series of recent attacks in France.
Macron insisted he is committed to fighting Islamist terrorism, but said Le Pen’s proposals could lead France to a civil war.
Le Pen said Macron as president would allow France to be crushed by its economically powerful neighbor Germany. Earlier Le Pen proposed holding a referendum on France leaving the EU. Macron said he wants closer cooperation with the union.
Polls conducted before the TV debate showed Macron leading 59 to 41% with the final round of voting to take place on Sunday.
