Among the defendants are Supreme Guide Mohamed Badie of the Muslim Brotherhood, the General Secretary of the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) Mohamed El-Beltagy and its Vice Chairman Essam El-Erain, and cleric Safwat Hegazy. The four are being held on serious charges. The order was based on a decree issued by President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in October, ordering the army to coordinate with the police to protect key places and authorizing military trials for civilians accused of attacking state infrastructure. The temporary decree, which will expire in 2 years, was issued just days after an attack by jihadist gunmen on a military checkpoint in northern Sinai killed 30 soldiers.
