Several countries praised the ceasefire, seeing it a “decisive moment” in the near seven-year conflict. US Special Envoy for Yemen Tim Lenderking said the UN-brokered two-month truce was a “first step” to a permanent ceasefire.
The United Arab Emirates (UAE), Iran, Iraq and Algeria supported the ceasefire, considering it a promising turning point that could bring peace to the country. They all expressed support for all efforts and initiatives to end the crisis in Yemen.
The Saudi-led Arab coalition intervened militarily in Yemen in 2015, a year after the Houthis seized the capital Sanaa and parts of northern Yemen. A military coalition of Arab countries, led by Saudi Arabia, intervened in 2015, aiming to push back the Houthis and restore the government.
