(VOVWORLD) -Sudan’s escalating armed conflict has spurred many countries to scramble to evacuate their citizens who are stranded there.

France’s Foreign Affairs Ministry said Monday that the French mission in Khartoum will be shut until further notice. Bloomberg earlier reported that the French embassy in Khartoum had come under attack.

The United States is positioning naval assets in the Red Sea off Port Sudan to assist any Americans leaving Sudan, but no major US evacuation is yet under way, White House spokesman John Kirby said on Monday.

The first batch of Chinese personnel have been safely evacuated to a neighboring country, said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning.

Nigeria said on Monday that it plans to start convoying nearly 3,000 of its nationals, mostly students, from Sudan to Egypt this week.

Kenya has stepped up efforts to get its citizens out of Khartoum by air and by road.

Uganda on Monday evacuated more than 200 nationals from Khartoum by road to Gadabi, Ethiopia.

South Korea’s presidential office said a bus carrying 28 South Korean citizens has arrived at Port Sudan New International Airport for evacuation by military aircraft.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that the violence in Sudan could engulf the whole region and beyond and called on Security Council members to exert maximum leverage.

Clashes between the Sudanese Army and its rival, the Rapid Support Force, have left at least 424 people dead and about 3,730 wounded since April 15. Millions of Sudanese have been stranded without access to essential services.
