Party General Secretary and President Nguyen Phu Trong addresses the 12th Party Central Committee's 9th session in Hanoi, December 25, 2018.

Senior Party members are expected to comment on a report reviewing the leadership of the Politburo and Secretariat this year. In his opening remarks, Party General Secretary and President Nguyen Phu Trong stressed that while the session’s duration is short, the issues debated and decided are of paramount importance.

“The personnel planning discussed at this meeting is  crucial in the preparation for electing members of the Party Central Committee for the 2021-2016 tenure. We need to strictly comply with regulations and maintain objectivity in order to rout out unqualified candidates, particularly those who have shown signs of political and moral degradation and corruption,” Mr. Trong said. 

The Party Central Committee is also considering disciplinary measures against several high-ranking officials.
