(VOVworld) - Tension in Egypt accelerated when Islamists supporting ousted President Mohamed Morsi and the opposition backing the army on Friday both called for a protest to mark the 40th anniversary of the Egyptian military victory over Israel.

According to the National Alliance to Support Legitimacy (NASL), the protest, called “We need a new victory”, will oppose to the coup against Egypt’s first civilian President. NASL said current army leaders were the first in Egypt’s history to fire their guns at the people. It called on its followers to gather at the biggest mosques in Cairo and adjacent Giza province before heading to Tahrir Square as a move to challenge the army and opponents. Tahrir square was the hot spot of the protest to overthrow Hosni Mubarak in early 2011 as well as Mohamed Morsi last June.
The Tamarod movement also called for protest in front of the presidential palace and major squares across Egypt to mark this anniversary. The movement was behind the mass anti-government protests last June, which resulted in the army’s removal of Morsi.
The move has raised fears of clashes between the two rival factions. Egypt’s security forces were put on high alert.
