China records 7 million COVID-19 cases a day at pandemic peak

(VOVWORLD) -7 million people in China were infected with COVID-19 and 4,300 died when the pandemic reached its peak late last month, the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said on Wednesday.

China has for the first time announced the nationwide COVID-19 infection situation after relaxing its pandemic restrictions.

According to data posted on the official website of China CDC on Wednesday, around December 22, 2022, the number of COVID-19 infections and visits to fever clinics across China reached their peak with new infections surpassing 7 million and visits to fever clinics reaching 2.87 million on a daily basis, and the number of deaths reached a daily peak of 4,273 on January 4.

The number of severe cases in the country has decreased 72% from its peak, while daily deaths in hospitals decreased 79% to 896 cases on Monday, January 23.
