(VOVworld) – The UN 2014 Vesak Day entered its 2
nd working day on Friday with many discussions on Buddhist contributions to the implementation of UN millennium development goals. International and domestic Buddhist monks and dignitaries agreed that Buddhism should contribute to building a world of peace, tranquility, and happiness, and to help people enjoy a tranquil life.
The discussions illustrated that Vesak is an invaluable opportunity to spread the Buddha’s message of mercy, peace, and non-violence around the world. Many of the reports delivered at the event proposed solutions to the global crisis, conflicts, and disputes to join hands to implement the UN’s millennium development goals. The Most Venerable Thich Chon Khong from the Central Instruction Committee for Buddhist followers, said: "We believe that Buddhist thoughts and tenets that have existed for the past 26 centuries will contribute to the implementation of UN millennium development goals, including those related to world peace, epidemics, economics, social morals, and environment."
UN 2014 Vesak seminars are places for different international and domestic Buddhist sects to meet and learn from each other with the ultimate goal being to contribute to world peace. Monk Thich Tri Vien represents the Buddhist followers’ community in the US: "Buddhism teachings enlighten people and help them live a happy and peaceful life. Buddhism is closely associated with patriotism as it encourages people to contribute the homeland, as well as the world, at large to ensure world peace."
