In Sao Paulo, where Pele started his career, the local government decided to mourn the "King of Football" for a period of seven days in honor of Pele's dedication to Brazilian football. The city of Santos, whose club Pele played for most of his career (1956-1974), will also commemorate him for seven days. The city government said it would name the route leading to Santos city "Rei Pele" (meaning King Pele).

The public will be able to pay their final respects to the greatest football player in Brazilian history on Monday at the Vila Belmiro stadium, home of the Santos club. Pele's funeral will be held privately in the presence of his family members on Tuesday at the Ecumenical Necropolis cemetery.
