(VOVworld) – Australia has called on more European nations to join in air strikes against the Islamic State (IS) in Syria and Iraq as part of the solution to the escalating migration crisis in Europe.

Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop told reporters in Sydney on Monday that over 40% of the people currently seeking asylum in Europe were from Syria, and a united front is needed to defeat the terrorist organizations that are driving the displacement of many people. She said 60 countries are providing support to the US-led coalition, adding that more countries can do in terms of supporting the air strikes to stop IS from taking further steps.

Only a handful of European nations are currently conducting air strikes against IS, including France and Britain, as part of the coalition of Western and Arab powers.
