Their air forces will take part in air defence exercises and support the maritime component in anti-submarine exercises. Among the highlights is a "contactless" maritime drill held in the waters of Singapore, Malaysia, and southern parts of the South China Sea (called the East Sea in Vietnam) in international waters. The drills are designed to strengthen cooperation with other member-nations and build professional relationships.

New Zealand’s Defense Ministry said on Wednesday that its military forces have been working in Southeast Asia within regional commitment frameworks. New Zealand has abided by navigation and aviation freedom in line with international law, including the 1982 UNCLOS.

Australia's Chief of Joint Operations, Lieutenant General Greg Bilton said the FPDA is a trusted mainstay of regional security. When the five nations come together they strengthen cooperation and sustain professional links.
