(VOVworld) - Recent tensions in the East Sea after China’s placement of oil rig Haiyang 981 in Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ) and continental shelf were the topic of a recent seminar held by the Asian Commission of the Argentine Council for International Relations (CARI) in Buenos Aires.

Vietnamese Ambassador to Argentina Nguyen Dinh Thao told attendees that China’s actions not only violated the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea but also run counter to the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea signed by China and ASEAN in 2002. He added that Vietnam has sufficient legal and historical evidence of its sovereignty over Hoang Sa and Truong Sa archipelagoes, stressing Vietnam’s insistence on resolving all disputes peacefully in accord with international law so as to maintain peace and security in the region and the world.
Filipino Ambassador to Argentina Maria Amelita C. Aquino criticized China’s ambition of occupying the entire East Sea using groundless claims of a “Nine-dash line”, which violates the territorial integrity of neighboring countries. Aquino mentioned that the Philippines filed a petition with the UN’s Permanent Court of Arbitration against China's “Nine-dash” line claim and its occupation of Scarbourough Shoals (known as Huangyan in China) which has prevented the Philippines from exercising its rights in its own EEZ.

Julio A.Hang, Director of the CARI Institute for International Security and Strategic Affairs called China’s stationing of an oil rig in Vietnam’s EEZ a “serious” action that has sparked tensions with neighboring countries, including Vietnam and the Philippines.
