The annual prize recognizes young scientists who have demonstrated a commitment to excellence in scientific research, as evidenced by scholarly publication and cooperation with scientists from other APEC economies.

The prize aims to strengthen international science and technology networks, improve linkages between research and innovation, and boost economic growth, trade, and investment opportunities that support sustainable development.

This year’s ASPIRE theme is "New Material Technologies”. This interdisciplinary theme focuses on using new, advanced materials to drive scientific innovation.

This year there were 17 nominees for the prize, the largest number of nominees in the seven years the prize has been awarded.
