7.0 quake shakes US-Canada border

(VOVWORLD) - The US Geological Survey (USGS) reported that a 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck Alaska at 20:41 GMT on December 6, shaking areas from the state capital Juneau to neighboring regions in Canada.

According to the USGS, the epicenter was located about 96 km northeast of Yakutat, Alaska, at a depth of 10 km. Local media said tremors were also felt in Canada’s Yukon territory.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Whitehorse said they received two emergency 911 calls related to the quake. “The tremors were definitely felt. Many people on social media said they experienced shaking, Sergeant Calista MacLeod noted, adding that there were no reports of casualties or damage.

The USGS said the Yakutat area, with a population of about 662, lies just 91 km from the epicenter. The quake was also felt in Juneau, roughly 370 km away, and in Whitehorse, about 250 km from the epicenter.
