The fifth day of the first lunar month of the year sees the Dong Da festival held to commemorate the victory of King Quang Trung, also known as Nguyen Hue, over the Chinese Qing invaders. Thousands of local people head to the Dong Da festival in order to commemorate the 231st anniversary of the Ngoc Hoi-Dong Da victory which came in 1789. Chairman of the Hanoi municipal People’s Committee Nguyen Duc Chung stands alongside a range of delegates as they attend the festival in order to commemorate the event. Delegates take time as they offer incense in front of the statue of King Quang Trung Nguyen Hue. As part of the opening of the ceremony, drummers put on an exciting performance to entertain crowds. The reenactment starts with a scene displaying King Quang Trung entering the battlefield. The Ngoc Hoi-Dong Da festival serves as a display of national unity and patriotism for many local people. For many citizens in Quang Trung ward in Dong Da district of Hanoi, the fifth day of the first lunar month has developed into a memorable day due to the celebrations.
