(VOVworld) – Located in An Thoi town, Phu Quoc island, Kien Giang province, Phu Quoc prison was built in 1949-1950 by the French colonists to jail those considered hostile to the colonial government. Previously known as the Coconut Tree prison, this was called a “hell on earth”.  Today, the prison is a popular tourist destination where visitors can  learn more about Vietnam’s struggles for liberation. 

Covering an area of 40 hectares, the prison was surrounded by dense barbed wire fences.

This was the infamous “Tiger’s cage” in Phu Quoc prison.

Phu Quoc prison had 14 rooms, some built in late 1972. Each held up to 3000 prisoners.
