B: Hello, guys and gals. In today’s Food Delight, we’ll introduce a British dish called “Toad in the Hole”. This recipe came from our friend, Sanny Hoskins, who is an English university student.

“I don’t know why it’s called “Toad in the hole”, but have you ever heard of “Yorkshire Pudding”? Yorkshire pudding is something you can have with a roast dinner. So it’s kind of like a cup of butter and you can put like chicken or beef or anything in that,” said Sanny.

“But ‘Toad in the hole’ is a dish that changes a little bit, where the whole thing is Yorkshire pudding but in the shape of a square with a loaf of sausages just inside it.”

A: “Toad in the hole” is a weird name for a dish, isn’t it? But don’t worry. There are definitely no toads involved. According to Sanny, this is a traditional English dish consisting of sausages baked in a Yorkshire pudding batter and served with gorgeous onion gravy.

B: It is a meal fit for a crowd, a special treat on a Sunday, incredibly quick and easy to make, and always a hit with children and adults alike. Who doesn’t want a piece of a pork sausage inside a tasty Yorkshire pudding?

A: Sounds good. Here’s the recipe, so you can make this easy meal at home.

“It’s very easy to make ‘Toad in the hole’. You just have to cook the sausages and when the sausages are being made, you make the batter. And to make the batter, you use flour and salt and you mix it together. You kind of spoon well in the middle so you have a hole where you put the eggs and then you batter it together. You add some milk as well and keep adding if it’s not going in to battering shape,” Sanny elaborated.

A: The sausages used in this recipe may be pork or chicken sausages. What's important is to keep an eye on the sausages and allow them to cook until lightly golden.

B:  Now Sanny will tell you how to finish this dish.

“And then once the oven is done with the sausages, you put the sausages in a big square tin and you pour the batter on top. Then you put it back in the oven and after 30 minutes, you bring it back out and it’s just like a really nice baked dish. But you can add vegetables and gravy to it to make it better.”

A:  The trick when it comes to cooking this British classic is not to open the oven while cooking or the batter might collapse.

B: “Toad in the hole” can be served with mashed potatoes, green salad, and onion gravy. Fluffy Yorkshire pudding batter combined with juicy pork sausages, and a generous serving of rich onion gravy, is something you and your family will want to cook again and again.

A: Give it a try. You won’t be disappointed. We’d love to hear from you and what you thought of this Toad in the hole recipe. Follow us on our Facebook Fanpage - VOV5 English Service - or email us at englishsection@vov.org.vn. Thanks for listening. Happy cooking!
