Mekong Delta modifies tourism products in post COVID-19

(VOVWORLD) - The COVID-19 pandemic has sharply decreased the number of tourists visiting Vietnam’s Mekong Delta provinces. Travel agents and tourism companies in the region, determined to revive the industry, have implemented stimulus programs and created new tourism products to draw tourists back to the area.

Since late April, after a two-month coronavirus shutdown, tourist destinations in An Giang province have been gradually reopening to receive visitors.

Thanks to the support of local administrations and agencies, the number of tourists to An Giang province has recovered to about 70% of previous years.

Ly Thanh Sang, Director of the Cam Mountain Cable Car Tourist Complex, said, “When we resumed operation, the number of arrivals amounted to only 30% of last year. We then offered more discounts, money-saving services, and special discounts for students. After a month and a half, the number of visitors increased to about 70% of last year.”

Travel agents, service providers, hotels, and restaurants in Can Tho have launched several stimulus programs and new tourism products.

Vo Xuan Thu, Director of the Victoria Can Tho Hotel, said the company has launched a new river cruise linking Can Tho and Chau Doc in An Giang province. The Mai Linh Tay Do Company, a subsidiary of the Mai Linh Corporation, has launched a new high-speed boat trip from Can Tho to Con Dao.

The aviation sector has launched new routes between Can Tho and Hai Phong, Vinh, Buon Ma Thuot, and Phu Quoc.

Le Thi Be Bay of the Con Son Tourism Community said, “We have created new programs tapping local cultural and tourist potential. We consider the pandemic an opportunity to reinvent ourselves. We are prepared to welcome tourists to Con Son with new attractive programs.”

During the coronavirus lockdown period, Dong Thap province upgraded the local tourism infrastructure to create a more attractive tourist destination.

Tran Thanh Dien, who offers tourist services in Sa Dec Flower Village, said local tourism companies and tourist sites have cut ticket prices in half while improving the quality of their services.

“Sa Dec Flower Village is one of the places recovering fastest from the pandemic. Recently our date palm gardens have attracted many tourists. All tourist service providers are aware of the importance of creating a unique experience to attract visitors,” said Dien.

Nguyen Thien Thanh, Deputy Secretary General of the Mekong Delta Tourism Association, said 100 businesses in the 13 Mekong Delta provinces and cities and Ho Chi Minh City have participated in the region’s stimulus program.

“The Vietnam Tourism Association has given the Ho Chi Minh City Tourism Association the exclusive right to offer a tourism stimulus package for the Mekong Delta. Ho Chi Minh City will package the region’s tourism products to help them quickly rebound,” said Thanh, adding, “The Mekong Delta is a safe destination with its own well-established brand. This is an important prerequisite to attract tourists,”.
