(VOVWORLD) - This year’s World Water Day, March 22, is about water and climate change and how the two are inextricably linked. The theme spotlights the importance of conserving water resources and managing them sustainably. Several activities in response to World Water Day 2020 are underway in Vietnam.

The theme for World Water Day 2020 is using water resources effectively and sustainably to adapt to climate change. Measures to protect water resources and submerged areas, smart agricultural production, and safe use of waste water are being promoted.

Banners and posters advertising World Water Day 2020 have been hung in cities and provinces across Vietnam. Localities have initiated campaigns to conserve water and adapt to climate change, promoted environmental protection movements, and honored role models in water resource conservation and management.

The public has responded enthusiastically to these activities. Bui Thi Minh Chau, a Hanoi resident, said: “Water resources, vital to human life, are drying up due to climate change.  Every person needs to take responsibility for protecting water resources. Every family should conserve water. The State needs to make plans to protect and manage water resources effectively and sustainably.”

Vietnam has 3,450 rivers and streams with total surface water of around 840 billion cubic meters per year, only 40% of which originates in Vietnam. The rest arrives from neighboring countries. Due to climate change threats, conservation and development of water resources are high-priority tasks for Vietnam.

Vietnam is encouraging every organization and individual to save water, reduce the use of underground water, plant trees, and protect the forests.
