Renewable energy is derived from natural processes that are replenished constantly. Wind and solar are examples of unlimited energy resources, which are environment friendly.

Vietnam’s renewable energy under development accounts for 46% of the total power capacity under development. Nguy Thi Khanh, Director of the Green Innovation and Development Center, said: “The Vietnamese government has issued policies and incentives to promote clean energy development, including the Politburo’s resolution guiding Vietnam’s future energy development strategy. The resolution says breakthrough policies are needed to exploit renewable energies, reduce pressure on imported power, focus on wind and solar power generation to ensure national energy security, and gradually reduce and replace fossil power.”

With its advantages of 3,200 km of coastline and an average wind speed of 6m/s at a height of 65 m in the East Sea, Vietnam has a huge potential to develop wind power, particularly in the central region, the Central Highlands, and islands.

More than 100 solar power projects have contracted with the Electricity Group of Vietnam. The total capacity of operating solar power stations is 6,000MW, mostly in the southern provinces of Ninh Thuan and Binh Thuan. Vietnam aims to have renewable energy making up 15 to 20% of the total primary energy supply by 2030 and 25 to 30% by 2045.
