Hoi An ancient town welcomes foreign tourists after months of closure

(VOVWORLD) -  Last Saturday, a group foreign visitors under a pilot vaccine passport program began their tour of the ancient town Hoi An in Quang Nam province. They are the first foreigners to visit Hoi An since international commercial flights were suspended early last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The tourists traveled by cyclo from Song Hoai square across the An Hoi bridge to the Chua Cau (Bridge Pagoda) area. 69-year-old Peter of Sweden says he has been in love with Hoi An since 2009. His wife is Vietnamese and he considers Hoi An his second home. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he was unable to visit Hoi An for 19 months.

The Quang Nam provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism and Hoi An administrators set up a stage at the Chua Cau roundabout to receive their first foreign visitors in two years.

Nguyen Thanh Hong, Director of the Department, said, 'Quang Nam province has a variety of tourism products: the sea, World Cultural Heritages, golf courses, recreation facilities, and agricultural tourism products. We are promoting green tourism and efforts to protect the environment, and ensuring health safety.'

Tran Van Tan, Vice Chairman of the Quang Nam provincial People’s Committee, pledged to create favorable conditions and best services for tourists during their stay.

'We are prepared to deal with any infection detected among the tourists. We reserved an isolated resort and on-the-spot medical care for COVID-19 patients with light symptoms. Those in critical condition will be classified for a different level of treatment,' said Tan.

Quang Nam province is one of the first localities in Vietnam to receive foreign tourists under a vaccine passport program that will be expanded in the near future. Other designated destinations are Quang Ninh, Khanh Hoa and Kien Giang provinces and Da Nang city.
