Nguyen Son, a chivalrous military general, made history with his resounding exploits in both Vietnam and China. The 400-page book “Our father Nguyen Son-Hong Shui, a general of both Vietnam and China” was written by his Vietnamese and Chinese children Nguyen Thanh Ha and Chen Han Feng. The book records the revolutionary life of General Nguyen Son in China and Vietnam after he followed the call by Nguyen Ai Quoc, who later became President Ho Chi Minh, to go to Guangzhou, China, to attend a special political course, study at the Whampoa military academy, and join the Chinese “Long March.” Returning to Vietnam, he was appointed Chairman of the Southern Resistance Committee and the South-central Resistance Committee, and Chief of Staff of the Ministry of Defense.

In an article published in the People’s Daily about his visit to Vietnam on November 5-6, 2015, China’s Party General Secretary and President Xi Jinping mentioned General Nguyen Son in connection with the Vietnam – China relations. He wrote: “Nguyen Son-Hong Shui, a famed Vietnamese general, in response to a call by President Ho Chi Minh, devoted all his energy to the Chinese revolution, participated in the Chinese 25,000-mile “Long March”, and became the sole foreign general among the founders of China and one of very few generals who have represented two countries.

China Book Publisher released the book on the 60th death anniversary of General Nguyen Son on October 21 and the 80th anniversary of the Long March by the Eighth Route Army. The book is part of a special book series on prominent Chinese leaders, showing the respect the Chinese Party and State feel for what the general did for China.

The book helps preserve precious historical evidence of the two countries’ revolutions, keeps alive memories of the legendary General, and nurtures the friendship between Vietnam and China.
