Tay and Nung language programs are broadcast in northeastern Vietnam, which is home to the largest population of Tay and Nung. The programs reflect and promote the local culture and customs.

The Tay and Nung language programs were officially launched last December after a 9-month trial run. The programs have gotten a positive response from the Tay and Nung communities. Ms. Trieu Thi Sim, a Tay woman living in Lang Son province said: “Many Tay and Nung people enjoy listening to radio programs on the Voice of Vietnam. We hope that through these programs, our language and traditional melodies of Then songs will be preserved”.

Radio has become a way for Tay and Nung people to learn about Party guidelines and State policies. Ms. Doan Thuy Huyen of Bao Lac district, Cao Bang province, said: “I get lots of useful information from the radio. And the programs are helping to preserve the languages and traditional cultures of the Tay and Nung ethnic people”.

Mr. Be Ngoc Thuan, Deputy Head of Bac Kan’s provincial Ethnic Affairs Department, said: “Tay people make up 54 percent of the population of Bac Kan province. The radio is a useful information channel which helps preserve our language and culture and disseminate Party guidelines and State policies. It also raises public awareness about building new rural areas and eliminating poverty”.
