During social distancing, thousands of households in Ho Chi Minh City received books and magazines through a program sponsored by the Ho Chi Minh Youth Union, the Vietnam Publishers Association, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Information and Communication, and the Ho Chi Minh City Book Street Company.
“We launched this program because there is a great demand for reading at quarantine sites. We have collected more than 10,000 books, 2,000 video books, and more than 100 e-books from publishing houses, and book companies and sent them to people in quarantine. These included comic books, novels, and books about science and life skills,” said Mr. Le Hoang, Vice President of the Vietnam Publishers Association.
Ms. Nguyen Kim Oanh of BinhThanh district was happy to receive books and magazines from Youth Union members. She said, “Reading is a good habit. I spend several hours a day reading books with my children.”

Many people positively responded to the reading campaign during social distancing. Reading groups were set up on Facebook to share interesting books and launch reading campaigns. Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong of Lao Cai city said reading is an interesting free-time activity.
“I think books provide useful knowledge we can use in our daily life. I post many books on Facebook for children and their parents to read,” said Hong.
Vu Quang Tan, a teacher in Hanoi, said he reads books and magazines every day to get information he can use in his teaching, adding, “During the social distancing period, I spent a lot of time reading and thinking about my future plans. I’m still ordering books.”
Reading is a good way to be entertained and to learn something, according to Nguyen Thuy Duong, a pupil in Hanoi: “Reading helps enrich my knowledge and bring me and my sister closer. It makes people feel better during this challenging time.”
